that's my dj

on this fine thursday eve, thought i'd drop you one nice little ting.
it happens to be the most beautiful photograph i've ever taken.

don't roll your eyes.
stop.

it was taken from my cell phone at a GIRL TALK show in halifax.
smack at the front. dancing like mad. huge sweaty men brutally trying to push past me
(nice try. come at me bro.)
with bass pumping in my ears.
but whatever. that's all symptom, after thought.

it's not about that.
it's about the perfect moment between strobes when all is still as salt.
all the girls dancing on the stage--irrelevant.
the confetti--irrelevant.
the sweat, the drunk kids, everything--irrelevant.

all that matters is the wonderful man who feels like he has all the power in the world in that soft glow from his laptop. in that glow is the thing that's changing the business of music, changing things.
all in that tiny light.
it all comes back to him.
beautiful.

to be remixed STAT.

ugh this absolutely breaks my heart.
and i feel like this is gonna be a really cranky, mean post.
i swear it's a lovely morning and i'm not trying to rip on anyone.
but it'd be a DREAM if some fancy dj could relieve these perfect beats from their vocals that just aren't doing them justice.

i hate to say it cause she's a wonderful danish gal but this nasty beat could deal without the weak chick rap.
(wait for the drop after 2 minutes... oooh baby!)

AAH that beat just kills me and normally so do beautiful swedish words... but..... ooh i sound like such a lame anglophone but it'd just be so convenient if it were aaah i can't even finish this sentence it's so douchie. baaaah.

i just need to stop this post now before the world starts to hate me.

i'm just gonna post-bomb the world and bury this post down in the depths of the blogosphere so no one has to see my angst. bleh.

but please.... remix these STAT.
k thanks :)

them swedes...

(i was tempted to rhyme swedes with bee's knees in the title of this post...
there are times when i feel terribly sorry for whoever has to put up with my writing)

REBECCA & FIONA
(or... if you want to find better videos on youtube, Rebecca och Fiona.
cheers to all of us learning pretty languages together.)

enter two fair maidens: Rebecca & Fiona,
the prime new DJ duo hailing from Stockholm, of course. where else would you find those cheek bones and pulsing pop sounds.

their album, "I Love You, Man" only recently dropped, but you've heard them on Kaskade's new album and all around the swedish club scene. those haunting and quiet voices perfectly juxtapose their dry snares and persistent bass, with many layers of inseparable magical synths. listen a little harder and you can just make out that perfect swedish accent peeking through when they pronounce words like walk or talk.

the album's got it all. even spank rock is on there (more swedes! whee!)
"Dance" has some dirty sub with twinkly synths and... yes those are strings!
"Hard" is a soon-to-be dance anthem with... crap just listen to it.

I think if ever they did anything with robyn i think i'd collapse into a swede-induced coma.

Plastic breakfast, platform creepers, pumpkin hair and turtlenecks?
I have no other words.
Cheers.

shameless plugging of the boy who lives in my basement.

of course.
within hours of starting this blog and 2 hours of his latest release
i'm already plugging Gabe Flaherty.

we've all been through the dubstep Adele remixes. although I love me some soft female voices thrown up against nasty ass bass that'll leave your speakers weeping, it's kinda been done.
and kinda been beat over the head with a crowbar

But this. kid.
makes the illest mixes.
he'll throw you a classic house beat with just enough dubstep to ground it in the soles of your feet, then shake it up with essentially everything you'll want in a remix.
There's variety, there's balance, it's just ill.

Also every so often a little nostalgic chiptune pops in.
just to remind you of your Anamanaguchi days of the tenth grade... but without being overwhelming.
cause let's be honest those were dark times.

i can't get over his remix of Toes.
Of course the new LIGHTS release, Siberia has been the soundtrack to my autumn and i'm bound to like just about anything coming out of that cheeky little canadian.

this chick absolute dynamite, and he treats her well... the remix highlights her.
it's true to her style of intergalactic melody but pushes it to the max--while still complimenting her simple but powerful vocal melodies.

this kid's great.
he's in the LIGHTS remix contest and he's gonna OWN so please vote for the kid.

please?

mashed and exploded

kids and explosions
don't we all love a good chill mashup?
discovered this guy about a year ago, he's the cousin of a friend and is such an interesting dj.
gotta say i've been listening to mashups since girl talk ripped the night
Back then it was all about a really simple rock beat... things were a little predictable but so funky fresh.
naturally I'll always hold a cozy little place in my heart for a classic mashup with a rock bassline, hip hop vocals and a little pop melody.
Since then they've gotten kinda glitzy, complex, housey, the beat's gotten a little more dancey which is grand and all but we're all kinda over it.

then there's kids and explosions.

his whole scene lies in super super choppy lyrics all spliced up and sewn together on top of lax rock/pop riffs and beats.
pop a little chewed up biggie on some messed up bowie and somehow this kid has injected a little life into the stale mashup. for this you deserve a salute good sir.

The New Science is my favourite........ and if your mama's not around Swear Words will doubtlessly get you on your feet.

Hey look.... I did manage to go a whole post without mentioning Robyn.
see, I am capable.
