ohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh
JUST DO IT ALREADY.

i feel like i've been really dormant on this blog lately. if you really must know i've just been listening to a strict diet of stevie nicks and country music for the last 2 weeks.
didn't think you really wanted to know.

a little May 2-4 treat

without bragging... i pride myself in having recognized all four samples featured in this masterclash upon my first encounter with it.
'scuse me... got some dirt on ma shoulders.

yes you're hearing little slices of
GORILLAZ + CHIDDY BANG + TINIE TEMPAH + LABRINTH

you just can't argue with Xaphoon Jones.
Stylo by Chiddy Bang has long since been a favourite, and Labrinth plays it off nicely by pulling in some UK grime courtesy of Tinie Tempah
So many vocal samples, so much jamming out with the sunroof down.

To all my fellow Canadians driving home from their long weekend at the cottage, have a lovely last evening of freedom, and let us toast to the great Queen Victoria for having given us this much needed birthday holiday.

God save the Queen.

oh norah.

sometimes you realize that
norah jones
has invaded your ear waves and you never even noticed.
i've always loved her, probably cause she's canadian--welcome to my weakness as a shameless nationalist

thought i'd give you a relaxing interlude between face-melting-electro posts to bring you a particularly well constructed concept album.

the cover art and her zazzy new website are wonderfully Tarentino-inspired, complimenting the sort of "dangerously bored" heartbreak that runs through the album.

in a word, i'd call it lazy rock n' roll.
as opposed to a rainy-day-sobbing-breakup-album, it's a sort of eyebrow-raised-at-your-idiocy-but-still-dwelling-on-it-exasperated-album, perfectly suited for rainy-day-alone-in-the-house-cooking-in-heels or just general hyphenated shenanigans.

not to mention it's produced by
DANGER MOUSE
who is particularly famous for the proverbial "biting of the thumb at the music industry" which came with The Grey Album. Unfamiliar with the formula? In essence:
instrumental of The White Album (Beatles) + vocals of The Black Album (Jay-Z) =
The Grey Album (Danger Mouse)
Read up here, it's really neat. Listen up here, it's a mashup cult favourite. Pay attention to 99 Problems (hear that Helter Skelter bassline? dang). Another particularly spectacular example of a concept album (see what I did there... eh... eh?!)

BACK TO NORAH...
this is the first single, but you should really stream the whole album here

not much of a weekend post but happy weekend ducks.
Roll out.

fresh to death

so many kids have been going bananas remixing
LANA DEL REY
with mixed results. but I like the way this treasure pairs her with super vulgar yet glorious NY rapper
and makes for a great party track.
the lyrics blend wonderfully and you just can't hate a fun house mashup.

party on wayne.

that's my dj

on this fine thursday eve, thought i'd drop you one nice little ting.
it happens to be the most beautiful photograph i've ever taken.

don't roll your eyes.
stop.

it was taken from my cell phone at a GIRL TALK show in halifax.
smack at the front. dancing like mad. huge sweaty men brutally trying to push past me
(nice try. come at me bro.)
with bass pumping in my ears.
but whatever. that's all symptom, after thought.

it's not about that.
it's about the perfect moment between strobes when all is still as salt.
all the girls dancing on the stage--irrelevant.
the confetti--irrelevant.
the sweat, the drunk kids, everything--irrelevant.

all that matters is the wonderful man who feels like he has all the power in the world in that soft glow from his laptop. in that glow is the thing that's changing the business of music, changing things.
all in that tiny light.
it all comes back to him.
beautiful.

mashed and exploded

kids and explosions
don't we all love a good chill mashup?
discovered this guy about a year ago, he's the cousin of a friend and is such an interesting dj.
gotta say i've been listening to mashups since girl talk ripped the night
Back then it was all about a really simple rock beat... things were a little predictable but so funky fresh.
naturally I'll always hold a cozy little place in my heart for a classic mashup with a rock bassline, hip hop vocals and a little pop melody.
Since then they've gotten kinda glitzy, complex, housey, the beat's gotten a little more dancey which is grand and all but we're all kinda over it.

then there's kids and explosions.

his whole scene lies in super super choppy lyrics all spliced up and sewn together on top of lax rock/pop riffs and beats.
pop a little chewed up biggie on some messed up bowie and somehow this kid has injected a little life into the stale mashup. for this you deserve a salute good sir.

The New Science is my favourite........ and if your mama's not around Swear Words will doubtlessly get you on your feet.

Hey look.... I did manage to go a whole post without mentioning Robyn.
see, I am capable.
